The Minneapolis NAACP Branch has fifteen (15) standing committees. Each plays a role in providing essential services and support to our community. Become a member today and see how you can help by joining one of these committees.

The vision of the Arts & Cultural Preservation Committee is to create and maintain a repository for the historical achievements of the Minneapolis Chapter of the NAACP. The Mission of this committee is to create a 21st-century platform on the accomplishments of this premier civil rights organization from 1900-2022 and beyond. To familiarize new members with achievements and proud legacy of struggle against racism/white supremacy and oppression in this country.

Oversee representation of African American children in the Child Welfare and Foster Care Systems. Child protective services agencies in every state are funded by the state and federal governments and have the responsibility for protecting children from abuse and neglect; both state and federal laws outline the policies, procedures, and practices of these agencies while the agencies may also develop internal operational procedures.

It is our goal to keep the community informed and aware of the organization’s mission, goals, accomplishments, and events and to make people aware of the benefits of becoming a member of the organization.

The mission of our Education Committee is to insure every child regardless of economic status or race has access to a safe, quality education that prepares them to reach their full potential.

FREEDOM FUND COMMITTEE/ MEMBERSHIP

NORMA ANDERSON, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

The Freedom Fund Committee is responsible for planning the annual Freedom Fund Gala. This is the biggest fundraiser for the branch each year. The goal of the gala is to raise money to sustain the branch and increase membership.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

BRIA GARNER, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

The Health & Wellness Committee is committed to ending racial health disparities. Our aim is not simply disease prevention, but to create an inclusive culture of healthy people and communities. We collaborate with communities through coordinated action to improve the social determinants of health — racism, poverty, exclusion, inferior schools, unsafe housing, poor nutrition, and toxic environments.

HOUSING STABILIZATION

OPEN POSITION, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

The Housing Committee will aim to address the challenging economic realities facing our country including poverty, lack of jobs and disproportionate high unemployment, lack of affordable housing, foreclosures, etc.

LABOR & UNION

LONDEL FRENCH, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

The Labor Committee will establish relationships with local employers, particularly those with larger workforces to promote the hiring of minorities. The branch has also reached out to other organizations, such as unions, with which there are shared interests to further job expansion and business development. The Branch has featured Mainstream Development Corp, an organization created to promote and support minority-owned businesses.

SHONEE PHILLIPS, CHAIR & KIMBERLEE WHITE CO-CHAIR

All committees are responsible for growing the membership of the branch. This requires volunteering at community events and educating the community on why they should join the NAACP.

POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE

OPEN POSITION, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

The Political Action Committee also known as “PAC” works to ensure voter empowerment by providing awareness, training, voter registration, education, and election participation. The NAACP has developed a nonpartisan voter empowerment program designed to empower Black, Brown, and people of color by increasing awareness and participation in the electoral process.

PRISON REFORM COMMITTEE

OPEN POSITION, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

This Prison Reform Committee is a support group to assist anyone who has been released from prison with an outlet to rejoin society. This community is there to provide resources to help keep individuals from ending up back in prison.

WOMEN OF THE NAACP

NORMA ANDERSON, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

The Women of the NAACP committee is a force to work on rebuilding the community and stand to make our communities safe again. This group will take on the challenge of being a resource for young parents guiding them in daily living activities, parenting skills, and budgeting.

YOUTH/COLLEGE COMMITTEE

HASSAN QAIS AS-SIDIQ, CHAIR & OPEN POSITION CO-CHAIR

The Youth/College Committee serves as the premier institution for young people to develop the skills they need to meet various challenges that face African Americans and other youth of color. NAACP youth units across the country engage in social justice activism, addressing issues at the local, state, and national level, with a primary focus on education, economic development, health, juvenile justice, and voter empowerment.
